As holding and hugging are not natural behaviours for dogs you will need to teach your puppy to happily accept all that this handling is just part of normal every day life. This is best achieved while he is an impressionable young puppy and it really is worthwhile investing a lot of time to establish this. It is extremely important that your puppy becomes relaxed and comfortable with being touched by you and even unfamiliar people. There will be times when you veterinary surgeon may have to physically examine your pup or he will need to undergo a procedure at the vets. Your vet will greatly appreciate a dog that can be safely handled and the situation will be far less stressful for the dog if he is not anxious about being handled. Start by gently touching your puppy all over when he is calm, if you do this as you stroke him. he will soon learn to trust and enjoy human touch. Practice lots of association of the puppy`s happy compliance at being handled paired with food rewards. When the puppy is happy with general touching, gradually increase the time spent on examining each part of the body. Introduce slight restraint of the puppy with a short very gentle hug as you give him a food treat; teach him that this is not a threatening gesture. Quietly speak to him as you reach for his collar touch it, give him a treat, do this several times, when he is ok with this reach for his collar hold it and give it a slight tug as you give him a treat. Go gently to start with, gradually teach the pup not to be intimidated by someone reaching towards his head and neck. As dogs use their mouth and teethlike we use our hands, they can be prone to injury, also dental disease is a common problem as the dog gets older. It is really important to be able to examine the pups mouth and teeth. To begin, gently place one hand under the pups lower jaw with your fingers very gently curled around and just touching the muzzle.. With the other hand stroke the pups head backwards from the nose and gently rest your hand on the pups head for a few moments as you quietly praise his cooperation, then give him a treat. Do this several times for a few days before actually looking at his teeth or opening his mouth. When the puppy becomes familiar with this and calmly accepts having his face handled this way, place one hand under the lower jaw and with the other hand without covering his nostrils or eyes (this would make him panic) gently raise his lips, occasionally briefly opening his mouth. Great care must be taken not to squeeze or hurt the pups mouth at any stage. Dogs can often become anxious about having their paws handled and as most dogs will need their nails clipped at some time, feet handling exercises will accustom the puppy to having a nail trim without aggression or undue anxiety. Pick up the pups paw and support it in your hand, with your index finger and thumb gently feel each toe and touch each nail. Give a big treat to the puppy for being good. Start with just one paw examination at the first session, then gradually progress to include all the paws in different sessions. Be patient and go slowly if necessary and be generous with rewards. Th aim is to help the puppy to tolerate and calmly accept having this touch sensitive area handled. Apart from nail clipping being able to examine your pups paw will come in useful if something gets stuck in his pad, or just to check they are in good condition. Getting the puppy used to having ears and eyes checked should be done in the same careful manner as medication may need to be administered on e day and it is of course important to spot any early signs of problems. Practice daily home health checks before having a good game with the puppy. Stroke the pup from its head down to the tail and check the pups behind which should be clean with no redness or swelling around the anus or matted hair. Run your hands through the pup`s fur to check for any unusual lumps or bumps or things stuck in the fur. Check his tummy skin is clear with no spots or scabs. Run your hand down the pup`s legs, pick up a foot and examine the pads. It is always handy that you can tell your vet that cut/lump/rash wasn`t there yesterday. Dogs don`t always know when something is wrong and can be very good at hiding ill health. Handling, grooming and regular health checks spot any potential problems early which may require a veterinary check up before they have a chance to develop into a more serious issue. As well as handling the puppy watch how he walks, runs, responds when you touch him. Get to know what is normal for your puppy and you will then notice even slight changes in behaviour or movement that indicates he may have a problem developing. As you get your puppy used to being handled, recognise the important signs of a healthy puppy. He should be alert but have a calm demeanour, the skin should be supple, clean with no parasites or dandruff. There should be no discharge from the nose, eyes should be bright and clear, the ears should be clean with no odour. Th teeth should be clean the gums pink (the puppy may have red and swollen gums during teething) . Th nails should be evenly worn not overgrown or broken. Th puppy should move freely with no sign of a limp or stiffness. The abdomen should not be tender or swollen. During the handling exercises if the puppy starts fussing about, remain calm and neutral slow down and proceed more carefully. Don`t let it turn into a game or battle. Take your time to get the puppy to accept being handled with gentle reassurance from you for good behaviour. Never handle the puppy roughly. When your puppy is happy to be handled by you ask other family members or friends to handle the puppy under your supervision, with lots of rewards for the puppy good behaviour. Handling is an extremely important part of the socialisation process but sometimes it is overlooked until it is too late and the dog becomes reactive and unable to be physically examined so any visit to the vet is a traumatic experience for the dog and you! With carefully planned regular handling sessions with your puppy, not only will you spot early any signs of any health problems you will be developing good control and relieving anxiety about being touched or restrained building a good relationship between you and your puppy. Junior handling at WUSV/GSDL-BRG regional events. Ligue des chiens de berger allemand de Grande-Bretagne Manipulation junior La conduite junior est devenue de plus en plus populaire depuis sa première introduction lors des événements régionaux WUSV/GSDL-BRG. Les classes sont divisées en deux tranches d'âge. 6-11 et 12-16 Une liste distincte de questions a été créée pour chaque groupe d'âge et un certain nombre de ces questions sont posées à chaque jeune conducteur avant la présentation de son chien. (Cela s'est également avéré très éducatif en apprenant diverses parties du corps et le standard de la race du berger allemand). Chaque manieur junior présente ensuite le chien exactement de la même manière que pour toutes les autres classes. Les juges n'attendent pas la perfection et aident à éduquer le jeune pendant cette phase. Les premiers événements régionaux ont débuté en 2013 et ont vu se développer de nombreux jeunes manieurs, et les éleveurs et les exposants leur donnent la possibilité de se présenter dans les classes les plus compétitives. Annual top 10 awards Notre objectif est de donner un maximum de publicité à nos jeunes manieurs et de tous les promouvoir via le site Internet de la GSD League. WUSV/GSDL-BRG Regional Event Classification. Age classes defined, and what is required re health tests, breed survey, GSDL health certificate, Koerung and gun test information. Certificat d'excellence WUSV/GSDL-BRG Upon the request of the show secretary, or the WUSV/GSDL-BRG secretary exhibitors may be asked to provide original documentation to confirm breed survey, koerung, health tests and working qualifications. This should be provided within 21 days of any such request. Minor Puppy:- for dogs of six (6) and not exceeding nine (9) calendar months of age. Puppy: - for dogs of nine (9) amd not exceeding twelve (12) calendar months of age. Junior: (youth, Jungend) - for dogs of twelve (12) months and not exceeding eighteen (18) calendar months of age. hip and elbow scores are not required, however if a score has been granted it must be disclosed.* Yearling: (young, Junghund) - for dogs of eighteen (18) months and not exceeding twenty four (24) calendar months of age. Either a British breed survey pass or GSDL health certificate is declared, or if a breed survey or GSDL health certificate is not yet attained, health test scores must be disclosed.* *Exhibits with health test results which will not qualify for a breed survey or Koerung pass are not eligible to compete at BRG events. If the score is being appealed, the exhibit is not eligible to compete until the result of the appeal is known and then falls into the range which would qualify the exhibit to obtain a breed survey or Koerung pass. ADULT CLASS REQUIREMENTS Adult 24 months +, British breed survey or GSDL health certificate. Any dog without Sch/IPO/VPG/IGP or equivalent training degree can enter the Adult class provided they meet the above criteria and passed a British breed survey or have a GSDL health certificate. WORKING CLASS REQUIREMENTS Working - Gebrauchshund (24 months+) All dogs must have a training degree of at least Sch/IPO/VPG/IGP 1 or equivalent. All dogs will be subject to off lead gaiting (no more than one lap of the ring). Any dog without a Koerung, may participate up to three years and six months old maximum, whereby they can achieve the maximum grading of V, thereafter they will only be eligible for the maximum grading of SG (very good). ADDIIONAL REQUIREMENTS All dogs over 12 months of age will be required to pass a GUN test. All dogs over 9 months of age maybe measured. LONG COAT REQUIREMENTS All dogs with a long coat of which an undercoat MUST be present. All rules and reguations pertaining to Health Checks, British Breed Survey/ GSDL Health Certificate/ Koerung and working qualifications are also applicable in accordance with the age group classifications as set out above. Since this time i have handled many dogs in club trials and 5 dogs in Nationals and FCI. In 1992 i became teaching helper from the state club Bayern-Sud. In 1993 i was the back half helper and 1999 the front half helper at the SV BSP in Augsburg Germany. Ihave given many seminars to handlers and helpers. I enjoy working with the dogs and their handlers. For 13 years i was the training director of my local club, OG Illertissen.In this time we have had many competitors at Nationas and 3 of them at BSP and FCI WM From 2003 till now I am president of my cub and 8 years IG Donau-Iller (18 clubs per region), too. In 1999 I became an SV judge. I have had the honour and the pleasure to judge several National and International competitions in Germany, Italy, Austria, South Africa, Canada and the United States. Rinus Bastiaansen (Belgium) - Protection Since my birth I was always surrounded and grew up with dogs but got my first working dog when I was 16. A few years later i purchased my first pup and became a member of VVDH (Belgian GSD Club). With this pup , my first competition dog, i competed later on in more than 80 trials, included 4 times Regionals and 3 times Nationals. I gained the bronze, silver gold brilliant training medals. Straight after i joined my club, i got involved in the protection and helper work. I got my official trial helper and tracklayer license in 1985. Beside a lot of local trials i was also a helper for Regionals, Nationals and Selection Trials. I became an official FCI judge in 1996. Beside the local trials, I also judged already in Regionals, Nationals, Selection Trials and Championships in Belgium and other countries around the world. I judged the protection phase at the 2014 world championship Universal Sieger in Slovakia and in 2017 the protection phase at the World Championship WUSV in the Netherlands. In 2018, i was invited to judge the protection phase at the World Championship FMBB in Slovenia. I became member of the working dog committee (of VVDH Belgium) in 2001 and from 2009 I was president of this committee for 9 years. For me it is an honour to be invited to judge at the Universal Sieger Word Championship in Great Britain. Finton Laylor (Ireland) - Long Down Age 47. Married with 2 children.
