Junior handling at WUSV/GSDL-BRG regional events. Deutsche Schäferhundliga von Großbritannien Junior Handling Seit seiner Einführung bei den WUSV/GSDL-BRG-Regionalveranstaltungen erfreut sich das Junior-Handling immer größerer Beliebtheit. Die Klassen werden in zwei Altersgruppen eingeteilt. 6-11 und 12-16 Für jede Altersgruppe wurde eine eigene Liste mit Fragen erstellt, und einige dieser Fragen werden jedem Nachwuchsführer vor der Vorstellung seines Hundes gestellt. (Das Erlernen verschiedener Körperteile und des Rassestandards des Deutschen Schäferhundes hat sich auch als sehr lehrreich erwiesen.) Anschließend führt jeder Junior-Führer den Hund auf genau die gleiche Weise vor, wie dies auch für alle anderen Klassen der Fall wäre. Die Richter erwarten in dieser Phase keine Perfektion und helfen dem Jugendlichen bei der Erziehung. Die ersten regionalen Veranstaltungen begannen im Jahr 2013 und haben dazu geführt, dass viele der Nachwuchsführer sich mittlerweile weiterentwickelt haben und ihnen von Züchtern und Ausstellern die Möglichkeit gegeben werden, in den wettbewerbsintensiveren Klassen zu kämpfen. Pups which are highly motivated can charge at owners, jumping up, nip hands and bite and tug on clothes. If this is directed at a child who starts to cry or run or tries to push the pup away this may be misinterpreted by the puppy as being a playful response from the child who is now joining in the pup`s game. Trying to cope with the pups increasingly rough attempts to initiate play, demand and dictate play by giving and doing what it wants will make it more likely that the pup will increase its play biting to get what it wants in the future, which can soon become a never ending battle of nipping, biting and jumping up. Trying to hit or grab the pup will probably make him become rougher as to him you are responding and joining in his game or he may feel he has to defend himself against your increasing anger. It is very important to avoid the stimulation and excitement escalation that go with physical punishment or restraint. Resorting to distraction tactics during a play biting situation like throwing a ball or waving a piece of food in front of the pups face to end the nipping can actually reward the pups demanding behaviour and rough style of play. In fact is learning to be even more pushy when he wants to play or get attention because it always works. Just ignoring him whilst he continues to chew on your hand or grab your clothing or leaving the room while he changes his target to someone else or decides to have a wonderful time rearranging the cushions or pruning the house plants will be completely ineffective in changing his problem behaviour. Using any form of harsh punishment is also counter productive. It may indeed stop the biting attack at the time. However it holds no instruction to the puppy to encourage and develop more acceptable behaviour for the future. So what to do to control puppies masquerading as sharks. It is quite a common problem with pups displaying a varying degrees of the behaviour with some becoming more difficult to cope with especially for the companion dog owner. The relationship and bond that a dog has as a family companion is special with most puppies given sensible guidance early on, unruly behaviour gives way to a more controlled, calmer attitude as the pup grows up. But some are more persistent and intervention is needed to communicate to the puppy in a way it can understand amore more acceptable behaviour and relationship. One method is to use the consistent application of an interrupting sound to temporarily supress the problem behaviour every time it happens combined with an immediate procedure which encourages the puppy to engage in acceptable play or behaviour. There is an important difference in communication to the puppy which behaviour we want between using distraction tactics or interruption tactics. For example with distraction tactics the puppy is fully engaged in still chewing on your hand at the same time being rewarded for it because a toy or food is being offered to him. With interruption tactics he has stopped or not quite even started chewing on your hand before being offered the toy or food so he is now being rewarded for the behaviour we want "NO BITING" An interruption sound is most effective if it happens just before the pup launches a mouthing attack on hands or clothes. To do this carry or place around the house a noise making device such as a small container with some pebbles in which can be shaken to make a loud noise, or a commercially bought "pet corrector" which is a small cannister that gives off a loud hiss when the top is pressed-handy to keep in a pocket. The intention is to startle the pup not to hurt him. His reaction will be one of surprise on hearing the sound causing him to temporarily stop his actions. At this exact moment you must fill this moment of inaction (otherwise he will go back to whatever he was ding before) by encouraging the pup to play in a more acceptable way with a toy by wiggling or rolling a ball along the ground close to him, keeping his attention on the toy. If he shows interest in your hands again, quickly repeat the interrupting sound and re encage him onto the toy. With some puppies just a stern "ah ah" can interrupt an unwanted behaviour, before giving an incompatible behaviour to focus on, he cannot be tugging on a sleeve if he is being rewarded for a sit. Some experimentation may be needed here because of individual differences between pups in their reactions to various sounds. It should not be difficult to find something that is effective. The sound should be enough to stop the problem behaviour immediately and every time but not so severe the puppy becomes extremely fearful and reluctant to approach at all. Always remember once a problem behaviour is interrupted you must reward an acceptable behaviour immediately. The puppy must be able to associate his rough behaviour with the consequences the sound he finds unpleasant. Therefore he will learn that his action-nipping and biting causes a reaction the startle sound which he will want to avoid. The moment he starts to get too pushy and rough the interrupting sound will pin point the exact moment he must stop. Any lack of clarity or consistency on your part about the threshold he must not cross will make improvement in his behaviour very slow, because he will not understand what he can and cannot do. For the pup to learn to inhibit the force of any mouthing, bites or rough interaction you must be consistent with the timing of the interrupting sound and very importantly remain calm while showing the pup the behaviour he can engage in. It can take some time but the better you are the quicker he will learn. To satisfy the pups motivation to play and be active in the games you teach him, such as find the toy hidden just out of sight encouraging him to use his nose as well as his eyes. Make it easy to find to start with to keep him interested. Include mental stimulation of highly rewarded gentle obedience training. Call him to you, calmly tell him to sit then reward with a titbit or resume play interacting with a toy. Teach him to lie down, wait, come when called, there is so much your clever puppy can do, giving him a positive outcome for his energy. Just something to bear in mind when trying to stop play biting. In a litter of puppies all is peaceful as they sleep, but one is awake, bored and wants to play. So he rushes up, pounces on an unsuspecting litter mate and gives a sharp nip. The other puppy responds and chases the attacker. The game is on. The very game your pups previous taught him how to get you to play. For play biting to decrease it is also important to follow some general management rules. Adding more opportunities for the puppy to take part in controlled interesting physical and mental games (suitable for his age) where success can stimulate the rewards brain chemistry and change his emotions to be more relaxed, instead of driving everyone crazy with unruly behaviour and continuous pestering to play. No more games of rough and tumble encouraging the puppy to bite and grab hands. Always supervise young children with the puppy. If your puppy does something you don`t let it happen again. Plan the incompatible rewarding behaviour. Concentrate on conditioning a well behaved puppy. Notice and reward desired human - puppy interactions. Locating and joining a good puppy class can be extremely beneficial. If possible find a GSD club. Overtime as other suitable behaviours are reinforced with clear calm instructions the puppy will abandon rough play to gain attention or hard nipping to try to push the family as he would his litter mates. All puppies and households are different and any behaviour modification especially rough play biting is an on-going process and should be appropriate for the individual situation. Gesundheit & der Deutsche Schäferhund Im Großen und Ganzen ist der Deutsche Schäferhund ein robuster, kräftiger und gesunder Hund, sehr kontaktfreudig und freundlich mit einer guten Langlebigkeit. Diese Tatsachen gelten sicherlich für Welpen, die von seriösen Züchtern gekauft wurden, die sich über viele Jahre hinweg konsequent darum bemüht haben, ihre Zuchttiere einem Gesundheitstest zu unterziehen, insbesondere im Hinblick auf Röntgenaufnahmen der Hüfte und neuerdings auch des Ellbogens. Es ist jedoch unvermeidlich, dass bei der Diskussion von Gesundheitsthemen die mit einer einzelnen Rasse verbundenen Probleme im Vordergrund stehen und nicht die allgemeine Gesundheit dieser Hunderasse. Ein in der breiten Öffentlichkeit weit verbreiteter Irrglaube ist, dass die Schauhaltung des Deutschen Schäferhundes zu Problemen mit dem Hinterteil beiträgt. Das ist völlig falsch. Bei der Ausstellung wird der Hund nur für einen Bruchteil der Zeit, vielleicht 30 Sekunden, platziert, während sein Körperbau beurteilt wird. HÜFTE & ELLENBOGEN-SYSTEME BVA/KC HD & ED - Das im Vereinigten Königreich anerkannte Programm, das ursprünglich von der GSD League eingeführt und betrieben wurde und nun auf alle Rassen ausgeweitet wurde. HD Die Werte für jede Hüfte liegen zwischen 0 und 53, was einen Wert zwischen 0 und 106 ergibt. Je niedriger die Punktzahl, desto besser sind die Hüften. Die ED-Werte liegen für jeden Ellbogen zwischen 0 und 3. Je niedriger der Wert, desto besser. Abweichend von der HD-Wertung beträgt die Höchstpunktzahl insgesamt 3. Seriöse Züchter befolgen die vom GSD-Zuchtrat aufgestellten Richtlinien. Bei HD sollte für die Zucht kein Wert über 20 mit einem Unterschied von nicht mehr als 4 zwischen beiden Hüftseiten verwendet werden. Für ED sollte für die Zucht kein Wert über 1 verwendet werden. SV HD & ED - Dieses Schema. wird vom SV in Deutschland betrieben und ist durch die WUSV weltweit anerkannt und anerkannt. Sowohl Hüfte als auch Ellenbogen werden geröntgt und bewertet. The scheme will be administered on behalf of the GSDL by the British Regional Group. This will follow the rules of the SV Körung system and will be recognised internationally for breeding (show) and performance events. What is a Körung? The SV controls breeding of German Shepherds in Germany and the Körung system is the way in which each dog is approved as suitable for breeding. They must achieve certain minimum standards in health tests, confirmation, stamina and working tests in order to be eligible to enter a Körung examination. During the examination, they will undergo a courage and protection test and a gunshot test. If they pass both of these, the assessor (Körmeister) will asses their confirmation, including measuring height, depth, circumference of the chest and weight and will produce a detailed description of the dog and may make recommendations for breeding. There are also minimum requirements fo dentition and males must have both testicles. The Körmeister may then issue a Körung which lasts for two years. After the two years, the dog is submitted again for a Körung test and, if it passes, gains Körung for lifetime (Lebenzeit). A dog may be bred from once without Körung and the puppies will be issued with a registration which indicates one or both parents do not have Körung. To breed a second time the dog must have a Körung and the puppies will be issued with full registration (pink papers). In practice it is rare for breeders to breed from dogs without Körung. What is a National Körung Scheme? Outside of Germany, WUSV member clubs are able to set up their own Körung schemes. They can appoint Körmeister and award Körung qualifications to dogs which meet the criteria that they set. The awards required to be eligible for the Körung i.e. show grade, AD test (stamina) and IGP qualification, which can be issued by judges approved by the WUSV member club. If the rules set by the WUSV member club, mirror those of the SV, the Körung will be recognised for all events which require it such as shows and the Universal Sieger competition. It is possible to gain a VA grading with a National Körung in any country including Germany. The only restriction in reality is that a dog is not eligible to be entered on the German (SV) stud book with a National Körung, for this all qualifications must be achieved physically in Germany. What are the rules for the National Körung System? In order for the Körung to be recognised internationally, it must follow the rules for the SV Körung scheme. Therefor in order to enter a Korung , all dogs must have the following: SV DNA SV A Stamp hips and elbows Completion of an SV character assessment A show grade of at least 'Good' under a GSDL approved judge A working qualification of at least IGP1. alternatively a Breed Disposition Test (commonly known as ZAP) pass. An AD pass (20km cycle ride test) During the Körung event, the dog must pass a courage and protection test (the same as you will see at Sieger shows) and a gunshot test. Finally the Körmeister will record the physical confirmation aspects of the dog and decide whether the dog merits a Körung pass - this is an endorsement that the dog has met all of the internationally recognised criteria for breeding. Will the National Körung Scheme be used to restrict breeding in the UK? Registration of puppies in the UK is currently governed by the Kennel Club and there is no credible alternative to this in terms of public recognition and resourses to administer it. The GSD League of GB has no plans to set up an alternative registration scheme. The National Körung will therefore, be a recognition of UK dogs which have attained a qualification recognised internationally as a dog suitable to be bred from. The GSD League of GB will keep a register of such qualified dogs available for public inspection. Will all dogs shown at Regional Events in the UK require a National Körung There is no intention to remove the Adult class from the UK Regional shows as it is recognised that the UK does not have the infra structure to facilitate all dogs attaining IGP even if they are capable of it. Entry into the Adult Classes will not require a National Körung. The intention is to make a Körung qualification more accessible to UK breeders and owners because they can achieve the qualification criteria under the GSDL approved judges and the Körung under GSDL approved Körmester. This reduces cost for the clubs holding qualifying events and ultimately breeders and owners. This will allow more breeder/owners to aim for and achieve entry into the working class at Regional Events and the British Sieger. Who will be the GSDL approved Körmeisters? The GSD rules for the scheme specify that GSDL approved Körmeisters must hold the status of GSDL approved SV Special International breed judge and must have in depth experience of the courage and protection test. Currently the GSDL approved Körmeisters are Heather Macdonald and Shirley Hutchinson. When will the National Körung Scheme begin? The scheme will start in 2025 with the intention of covering the whole of the UK and subsequent information will be published on this, the GSDL Website and Social Media pages.
