This is the biggest competition that has been held in the UK to date and was held at Nantwich football club on June the 7th -9th 2019. The preparations for the competitors started long before to gain the qualifications needed to meet the entry requirements firstly to own a GSD, then to have a show grading with a minimum of 'Good'. A Stamp hips and elbows, then the BH, AD and IGP1 UNDER AN sv judge followed by Körung (not essential but nice to have) then the progression through the qualifications to get you IGP3. The criteria for entry was set out with the dogs with the highest qualification scores being the highest ranked, GB01 Edmond Kan -Yuna v Waldwinkel, GB02 Linda Gammon - Helaka Annah, GB03 Jayne Wood - Helaka Asia, GB06 Gary Khakhian - Hasko Zde-Sko v Harztor, GB07 Martin Davies - Agonne Italiana (reserve), Team Captain Alison Lawrence. With the team set out we arrived on the Wednesday for the vet check a somewhat different experience for dog and handler new to this level of competition.  All dogs passed and the we all had to meet up for the team training on Thursday morning 5 minutes per dog but with Alison's experience as team captain we had a meeting to organise the finely tuned training session that followed with down stays, jumps, dumbbells, sendaways and heelwork all being carried out on the field simultaneously. Protection run through then followed with all the dogs having the opportunity to run hides with the field set up.
The draw was held on the Thursday night with each team being called up to pick a wooden GSD with a ribbon coloured blue for males and red for females to create the draw order for the event. At this point I was asked if I would be vice-captain by Alison to help with the team by looking after the stadium work and Alison would go to the tracking. Another first for me as along with Linda, Jayne and Thomas this was our first world event being involved with the team with our dogs.

The helper try outs were held with Ross Heron, Mark Rigby, John Padden and Nick Warman al being put through their paces, congratulations to all of them for making i to this point and well done to Nick and Mark who were chosen to do the helper work.
Friday soon dawned and the competition, Tracking, Obedience and Protection with the bitches going to the show ring for their individual showing with the judge. Jayne was the first to go to the show with her team and went through like a well-oiled machine the Jayne was off tracking getting an 88. Alan, Thomas and Gary also tracked gaining 97,93,72 respectively.
The first competitor in the stadium would be Edmond at 12.00. All competitors in the stadium work would have a collar check before and a chip check after the work and before the critique. This is something i haven't seen before with the collars being removed and checked before being replaced. Edmond scoring 90 points in our first protection round and Linda gaining 82 both bitches then went for their individual showing in the traditional British weather. Thomas and Alan concluded the day in Obedience gaining 87 and 88 respectively.
Saturday was the turn of the males to go for their individual showing being measured, stood and moved. Edmond and Linda were tracking first thing gaining 94 and 84 respectively. Gary was the first dog in the stadium gaining 84 in Obedience with Thomas next in protection gaining 92. Alan the followed with Protection putting in a 90-point performance. The came Jayne with a superb Obedience round with the judge making a special comment as to the partnership gaining . Gary finished off the working day scoring 82 in protection. We the had the Movement judging and completion of the show class for the females, tis was quite a spectacle with all the dogs in the ring together and fast pace off lead heeling, Jayne was placed 3rd, Linda 5th and Edmond 12th.
Sunday brought the last day of the competition with Edmond gaining 86 points in Obedience, Linda gaining 75 in Obedience, and Jayne gaining 91 points in protection. Then came the bitches in season with a couple of these dogs having the potential to win the competition which Jayne was currently leading. It was a nail-biting couple of hours , but no-one could dislodge Jayne from the top...
Then onto the Movement judging and completion of the show class for male again well worth watching with Craig Rice and Dany v Harztor putting in a fabulous picture leading his group around the ring. Again all the dogs moving together with no issues we then have the off lead fast pace getting special mention must go to Alan Woods with Dany a fabulous show and to Thomas with Axle who got the biggest cheer with his chariots of fire finish.
Huge congratulations to Universal Sieger 2019 Ronny van den Burghe & Korky v Barbatus for Belgium and Universal Siegerin 2019 Helaka Asia handled by Jayne Wood an amazing job well done. Edmond Kan and Yuna v Waldwinkel were 4th place in the bitches and Alan Wood &Dany v Harztor were 5th in the males. Team GB performed extremely well gaining 4th place overall which is a great achievement for UK dog sport. The team ethic was fantastic from the start to finish with the experience of Alison, Alan, Edmond and Gary at these big trials blending together with Linda, Jayne, Tomas and myself to truly make a team that supported each other and made that special effort when required to do TEAM GB proud.
Martin Davies - vice captain GB Team 2019
